work:2019:pentiment:synthesis

Synthesis was free-standing diptych, composed of a skeletal frame supporting stretched organza, onto which figures and background were painted and drawn in transluscent and transparent paint respectively. The frame is held together by ropes and tension alone– there are no permanent fasteners, such as glue or screws or nails. The organza panels are supported by dense, excessive embroidery, and knotted onto the frame using weaver's knots. The organza was then sized with gelatin. The abstracted background shapes were painted on with brush, the figures were drawn on with gel-pens filled with ink, mixed with gelatin (to create deliberate crazing). The figures project silhouette, the backgrounds project color. The projection is slightly sharper on the body of a viewer standing at viewing distance (though this effect is softened slightly by the light from “Disclosures”.) If the viewer stands directly in front of each panel, the image appears as a normal drawing; if they look at it from an angle, the backlighting responsible for the projection illuminates the paint differently based on density, allowing the viewer to see the order in which the drawing was made– areas where the initial layers are still visible are most brightly illuminated, and so forth. Synthesis stood 8'1“ high.
